For Rotary Year 2011‐2012, the Search Committee has decided to confer the award to Dr. Santiago G. Urmaza, Jr., a native of Pangasinan and a practising Ophthalmologist. Dr. Urmaza is a member of the Association of Philippine Physicians of New York (APPNY) and have been part of the bi‐annual medical mission in cooperation with our club since the mission started fourteen years ago. His team has conducted cataract operations and other medical eye examinations in each mission, including post‐operative and follow‐up examinations through the years, at no cost to indigent patients. He has also established hospitals both in New York and Pangasinan.

Even though the Search Committee faced the monumentally difficult task of having to select only one awardee, they wish to convey that they recognize and acknowledge the importance of the work you have done in the community you have chosen to serve in. In this respect we are all in awe of your accomplishments and can only hope to achieve even a fraction of it to live up to Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self”.

The new check donation of Mark and Loy Timbie in the amount of US$55,000 has cleared through BPI.

A reflection on Poverty

Poverty at its worst is given many a dwelling place in our world. Poverty is a creation of humankind, it is given life and sustained in life by humankind. There are many rooms in the mansions of the world that house poverty. Economic poverty is ultimately caused by our inability to use the gifts of this world justly that is to the good and sustenance of all. Unjust stewardship? Poverty at its best is a poverty that is achieved by the correct use of the gifts and goods of this world for the good and benefit of all humankind.

Whether these gifts be temporal or spiritual from the Lord or from the World it is people that allow economic poverty to achieve its full effect through our own and collective selfishness or through the placing of our trust in financial wealth and institutions and worldly position and possession. Jews, Christian and Muslim believers along with the State / Nations are capable of bringing about poverty in its best sense by forming structures and a means by which people can contribute to the “Common Good”

Poverty is also maintained and rooted in how we value the persons and things of this world. The artistic ability of Michelangelo was never meant by him to be valued at a higher price than a human being. Neither was it any Church’s idea when Michelangelo was asked to paint his paintings. The world will value the painting in artistic and financial terms the Church will value it for its artistic worth and for its spiritual uplifting of those who look upon it. It will not be valued for bringing people to faith in the Lord as it is impossible for any work of art to do so. The passing of time and human history has placed a financial worth on the painting while its only true worth is what the viewer is brought into while looking upon the image. A painting can be bought for thirty million pounds while a human person can be valued as of no worth when both valued in worldly terms. The Lord wants Jewish, Christian and Muslim believers and all Nations and States toput the value of the human person above all other values. The Lord values us as His ultimate creation. It is this value that must be safeguarded by the various religious believers and States

Poverty in its worst sense is of no worth to the Lord, to humanity or to the wellbeing of a state or a religious community. Poverty in its good sense is of worth to the Lord of worth to all Jews, Christians and Muslims and of worth to every State and Nation.

Poverty being “ The correct use of all created goods, the correct use of intellectual and human abilities and the correct use of all spiritual gifts for the good and benefit for all of humankind is the only poverty that the Lord desires and the only poverty that the world and its peoples need.

ACFSPI outreach to the indigenous tribe of the Dumagats

Trevor, Jill and Family donate £5000 to MOSPI

£5000 has been donated by Trevor, Jill and Family for the upkeep of the children of MOSPI. This kind gesture was in response to the possible closure of the orphanage due to a lack of financial support. It costs £12k to £15k a year to maintain the basic needs and costs of the orphanage. In this financial climate £12k to £15k is very hard to raise. Jill and Trevor have always had a deep regard for the work being carried out by MOSPI and I thank them for their much needed support at this time. Trevor and Jill also support the school of ACFSPI by supporting many of our poor students with their financial costs of education by paying their school fees every June. Jill began this support 12 years ago and Trevor has continued that support. In grateful appreciation, Fr. Jimmy.

Death of Nanay Cruz

One of our young adult students living in the slums of Manila with his parents and who is the uncle of Fatimah the baby whose life you helped save last year from Kawasaki disease has passed his final exams in accountancy. Christian studied in The Far Eastern University in Manila. I want to thank Aaron Horn for paying the last instalment of his university fees. The University have arranged for him to do work experience in Singapore. Unfortunately! I am personally unable at this time to cover the cost of his air fare and allowance to Singapore. Before the release of the Report cards of the students of Ateneo Casa Famiglia for the first grading period, the parents were gathered last September 15, 2011, and Fr. Roger, the Director gave a brief seminar on the importance of parents' participation in the education of their children and the importance of developing and instilling positive values among the children. To set the joyful mood of the day, the seminar started with an action song led by Ms. Elsa Lucero and Mr. Bobby Almonte. The teachers were stationed along the side to entertain the inquiries of the parents regarding the performance of their children.

Feeding programme for the under nourished children

Mater Orphanorum shares with the children of Sapang Palay Community through its Feeding Program. It surpassed the target number of children for the program. Today we had over 50 children, benefiting from the supplemental nourishment. In all probability it may be the only meal they will have for the day. Death of Nina Lopez.

It is with deep sadness that we inform you all of the death of Nina Lopez who along with her deceased husband Cesare were the first trustees of the charity and very close friends of Fr. Jim. Nina survived her husband by only one year. She died on the afternoon of the 6th September after a long and painful battle with cancer. Fr. Jim visited Nina on the 1st September. May she rest in the justice of the Lord.

In the aftermath of the UK riots I was left wondering if there is a collective psychology that is brought to the fore of our group/gang/ communal human consciousness and activated by the rioters collective disconnectedness from the family/social/religious community. The rioters appear to be judged from their individual psychological consciousness before the courts, I wonder if this should be the case. An individual's behaviour may change when persons gather as a mass or a swarm. This begs the question: Does a mass/swarm of people act out of a personal individual psychological makeup or out of a psychology that is unique to the mass gathering or swarming of persons. I do not know the answer and I am sure some psychologist may be able to answer it. I simply ask is it appropriate that young individuals be incarcerated in our prisons as having acted as individuals when the question of gathering in mass groupings or swarms is not taken into account as a psychological phenomena?

Helping the Indigenous Tribes.

For the past fourteen years MOSPI & ACFSPI has worked strenuously in the care of the children of the Dumagat Tribe. Many of the children have spent a large part of their lives in MOSPI and in ACFSPI. A number of these Dumagat children are supported in their college education. Marwin who has spent 13 years with us is now studying to be a MARINE Engineer. Bennie, another child of 13 years with us is studying to be an educator but has the desire to be a Policeman. Freddie who is now back with his tribe tells his own story on this Blog. Many of the Dumagat children are now efficient in reading and writing. These two young men are so unlike the past generations of their tribe who were mainly illiterate and this enabled unscrupulous people to abuse them and their lands.

MOSPI & ACFSPI throughout their years of existence has always had the children of this indigenous tribe among their students. 30 Dumagat children have been helped by MOSPI & ACFSPI. We presently have 10 Dumugat children in our care.

A meeting of the GASDF Board will be held on Aug 17. The members can already make a decision as to the kind of assistance that can be extended to Mater Orphanorum

The orphanage which is the primary interest of the Board - there is interest in the needs of those in lower elementary grades (to ensure foundational education). For college level the Board wants to help the orphans who are taking up Education to fasttrack their being able to help others, or support those who are finishing H.S. and going into Education.

Because GASDF also has limited resources the Board would like to be focused in the projects it supports and has certain criteria to follow in project selection.

Fr. Jim meets with Rodel Ramos the eldest son of MOSPI

Fr. Jim met with Rodel today to learn how life is for Rodel. Rodel has a first born son, named Arn David Ramos who celebrates his first birthday on the 24th August.
Rodel is presently employed by Department of Education as a public school teacher. He teaches Culiat Elementary School. A Muslim school specialising in Madrasah Islamic Values and Arabic languages.

Rodel is currently enrolled in a academic course for educational management. Rodel will then undergo a comphrension examination before taking his Thesis to obtain a Masters Degree. The JTJ. Trust Fund has financed his degree.

In 2009 Rodel was sent to Singapore to attend the International Science Conference to acquire new teaching methods to be used in schools in the Philippines. 2010 Rodel went to Mindanao to attend to attend a seminar on journalism. 2011 Rodel went to Marikina to attend a Digital Workshop. This involved learning new computer technologies in order to teach his students.

Rodel holds another position in the school as Science School Demonstrator. This involves scientific experiments with the students of the school. Rodel also trains students in Filippino Journalism. He is also ICT consultant.

Rodel attends and gives seminar on teaching strategy. He gives seminars to the teachers of MOSPI.

Rodel earns enough to support himself and his young family while financially responsible for the wellbeing of his parents. This responsibility to his family comes before any duty to MOSPI.

Rodel, a child of MOSPI has achieved a good position in life with every opportunity of promotion and financial stability. MOSPI and Rodel's own efforts made all this possible and he hopes that all poor children will be given the opportunity and hope that MOSPI gave to him. Rodel thanks the JTJ Trust Fund for their help in his achievements.

Due to the present world financial situation and the fall of sterling against the PHp peso now at Php67 to £1 and to the lack of financial donations it may arise that in the near future the trustees of MOSPI&ACFSPI will have to consider part or full closure of the work of the incorporations after 14 years of caring of the poor and abandoned children in it's care. We pray this will not happen but in order to continue the work of the incorporations we appeal for more financial donations. The home for poor and abandoned children needs approximately £45,000 a year to maintain it's current involvement in the lives of these poor children. We are a long way short of this funding. The JTJ Trust Fund is a major source of obtaining this funding and we appeal for you to contribute to the JTJ Trust Fund in order that our future care of the children can be assured. I encourage you my fellow living, breathing human beings who receive in abundance from the goods and gifts of this world to be generous in your giving of financial assistance to those in your midst you are deprived of the basic needs of life. MOSPI brings abandoned, abused children of impaired mental and physical ability into a family that cares for them. These children learn what it is to be accepted and loved again, this may take many years to realise but at least the work of healing the wounds of rejection and abandonment has begun when they enter their new home of MOSPI. ACFSPI and especially MOSPI is in danger of not being able to continue this work of education and loving care without your help. This past week five of our bigger boys were sent back into the community because our budget could not continue to finance their living expenses. They are all aged 17 yrs or more so with their school education we pray that they will succeed in living their lives.

The DSWD is currently referring to us children who suffer greatly from physical and mental disabilities. Children who will need life long care and assistance. MOSPI and ACFSPI relies solely on donations. We receive no governmental or city governance financial assistance. These children are ignored in many of the mandates in charitable funding trusts. Many of these mandates require the child to make a return to society after graduating from school and college. The children of MOSPI cannot fulfill this mandate so are ineligible for help.

I encourage you to help in maintaining the only life line these children have by supporting MOSPI and ACFSPI. 6000 children have been educated. 400 orphans have been cared for. In your generosity please help in the work of caring for these poor and abandoned children many neglected and abandoned because they have physical and mental impairments / illnesses.

A strange anomaly here, at least it appears so to me, is that the many Foundations that we have asked for financial assistance appear to place limits on assistance that in themselves seem contradictory to the good of those orphans with physical and mental lifelong impairments and also for poor students who have parents or even a single parent to care for them.

An orphan to receive assistance must be eventually in a situation after education to give a return to society. If he/she becomes a teacher in education then they in turn must assist in educating poor orphans/students after graduating; this is not possible for 99% of the children of MOSPI therefore they are not eligable for assistance.

Students of ACFSPI though poor and unable to support themselves in education are not eligable for assistance because they belong to a natural family situation. These restrictions on assistance noble and necessary as they may appear are still an obstacle to our children receiving financial help and assistance. Rejection and abandonment can be clothed under many an apparent noble guise.

I encourage you to be generous in your outporing of assistance and to give without measuring.

A new child of MOSPI (Carlos is not his real name)

Carlos has experienced rejection throughout his 9 years of living. With the whereabouts of his parents unknown, a person who stood as his guardian simply left him in the jeepney terminal one day, with no intention of coming back. Some kindhearted persons decided to bring him over to Mater Orphanorum, where he was given medical check-up. The doctor’s findings showed that he suffers from malnutrition and a genetic disease. His physical development is very delayed, he could easily pass as a three year old. But in spite of his harrowing experiences, Carlos always has a ready smile to anyone who could spend some time to talk with him. Although with a limited language he could melt your heart as you look into the childish innocence of his face. A result of the genetic disease will cause him not to live beyond his teen years. He relies solely on MOSPI for all his needs.

Fr. Jim had lunch with the UK Ambassador to the Philippines along with some friends of MOSPI and ACFSPI.

1) Do a postural / Scoliosis screen and check on the presence of Musculoskeletal Dysfunction within your community. We will look at prevalence - and make recommendations for Intervention once the needs have been assessed.

2) Teach and educate them on proper lifting and posture by educating them on a worldwide initiative of the international chiropractic community in partnership with the WHO called "Straighten Up" program. I have translated the material into Tagalog and call the program "Tindog-Pinoy".

3) For you high school graduates - or those college scholars with some medical background, we can train them in Myotherapy. Provide them skills to become effective muscle therapists...... and the best ones can actually seek employment with our centers to get some gainful employment. Others can be of benefit to local communities as their skills are enhanced. Simple first aid.....etc.

4) I have a friend who teaches Kundalini Yoga and Meditation who maybe willing to do some work with your kids. I find this ( like prayers) is a good way to discipline the mind and body and spirit.

The wonder of God's creative power can only be experienced when one is engaged in the fullness of life. The sad reality is that for the first time in the history of MOSPI we had to turn away 26 abandoned poor children from our family home because our budget could not allow us to cover their annual costs of education, board and lodging.

The school caters for the education of 180 very poor children. It is capable of accepting 500 poor students but because of our budgetary capabilities at present we can only cater for the 180 children. Forty of the 180 children are the children of MOSPI they receive full scholarship with board and lodging. 60 children of the remaining 140 children receive full scholarship payment with school uniform school supplies and books. 10 of these 60 receive free meals in school. The remaining 80 children receive 5000 Php (£70)in subsidies yearly. The normal rate in other schools is around 25,000Php £370. ACFSPI is 17,000Php £250.

The annual maintenance of the school is electricity 15,000 per month (£220) water 10,000 (£140) Office and school room supplies is 15,000 (£220. 11 Teacher salaries and 5 volunteers £500 per week. This includes health insurance and pensions for the teachers. We pay the Philippine Government a sum of money which enables our teachers to have an opportunity to
purchase their own house. This is a legal requirement on behalf of ACFSPI known as Pag ibig

The food bill for both incorporations is £80 per day this cost includes placing a monetary value for food donations of rice, chickens, eggs and canned goods etc.

The full potential of the school and it's facilities can be utilised to the complete education of 500 poor children from kindergarden to 4th year High School. Ages 4yrs old to 17yrs old. 13 years of education for each child. Help us to educate the 500.

We assist 8 MOSPI young adults in their College education also. £3000is the annual cost.

Our construction bill for the past 12 months amounted to 2 million pesos £28,000. We constructed the Library, 4 bedrooms catering for 20 children with bunk beds. A large refectory with a small kitchen and a small school clinic has also been completed.

An account was opened with the Bank of the Philippine Islands by Mr. Nazareno re: Endowment Fund. A second Account was opened with Citibank also. Documents of opening the account on behalf of MOSPI were delivered by the Citibank bank messenger for signature on the 23rd June 2011. We await the approval of the account.

Araneta Foundation: A letter of appeal was sent 3rd May 2011. This appeal is still being processed.

Rotary Club of Makati: IBM (International Business Machine. Re: Kidssmart Unit. Importation issues have recently been settled and Fr. Jim will meet with the Rotary Club members on Friday the 22nd July. Fr. Jim has been invited to become a member of the Makati Rotary Club.

The annual expenditure of the orphanage is approximately 53,000 pounds sterling.

Fr. Jim and Fr. Roger are finding it more difficult each year to finance the operating costs of the orphanage and we appeal for help. If "Financial Help" is not forthcoming it will be very difficult to assure the continued existence of the home for abandoned children in the coming years. I appeal to all to devise other options in maintaining a proper level of funding for MOSPI so that its work may continue for many years to come.

MOSPI in its fourteen years of life has assisted 200 orphans on their journey from childhood to adulthood. Some of whom are now professional workers: teachers, nurses and business people, IT technicans or instructors.. These now work for the betterment of their families. Fr. Jim insists that this be their first priority and helping MOSPI is secondary to this. No child is placed under any obligation to make a return to MOSPI in any shape or form.

We will soon receive the 5000 pounds sterling donated by Trevor Horn, Jill Sinclair and their family. This money will be used to pay 70% of the tuition fees and\ school books of the children of MOSPI. The cost is Php. 483,296.00 which is 7,213.00 pounds sterling.

MOSPI is a necessary home for the abandoned and abused children brought to our care by the Department of Social Welfare and Development. We receive no financial assistance from this department of city governance. They simply refer the children to our care.

Fr. Jim is hopeful that a fundraising event will take place in London in the near future in order that the home of MOSPI will be a home to many poor and abandoned children in the future, Please! Please! Please! WE NEED YOU TO HELP!

I would like to invite you, the staff and all the children of Mater Orphannorum Servants of the Poor Inc to an evening performance of Ballet students of the Claravall School of Dance located at BF Paranaque City and The British School Manila Taguig City. The show which is once every two years and entitled Hansel and Gretel and Other Dances will be held at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) Cultural Center of the Philippines on 3^rd June, 2011, Friday at 6:00PM.

It is divided into two parts. The first is a showcase of dances from different countries in various dance genres. The second part is the full-length Hansel and Gretel, a story of family care and support. Choreographers of the show have already made their mark in the dance industry.

Affiliated with the Royal Academy of Dance London, The Claravall School of Dance trains students in classical ballet and other forms of dance following the RAD discipline to become high caliber dancers or teachers. Most of these participants have passed the RAD Examinations conducted by examiners coming from the London Headquarters. It has developed students to compete in national and international levels and some of them have been accepted to join professional ballet companies here and abroad. Other graduates have become teachers and have opened up their own schools.

Our guest performers are scholars from Teatro Baile de Cavite headed by Brezhnev Larlar who also train talented children who come from the poor areas in Cavite. These scholars have been rehearsing for the past 2 months to be part of the once every two years grand recital.

H.R.H. The Prince of Wales invested Trevor with the title of Commander of the British Empire on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The title was invested upon Trevor for his work in music production and in sound recording. I was delighted to write a letter on Trevor's behalf for his being invested with this great honour. I wrote primarily of my friendship with Jill and Trevor and their families. I also wrote of Trevor and Jill's sponsorship of 12 poor children of ACFSPI and of MOSPI over the past 8 years. This generosity was expressed again this year when Trevor donated £5000 to the Fr. Jim Teeling, Trevor Horn CBE and Jill Sinclair Trust Fund. Trevor marked the day of his investiture with this kind act of generosity to the very poor families of MOSPI and ACFSPI. This in itself is a measure of the man and his wife and family. Trevor went to Buckingham Palace this morning to receive his CBE from H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. A celebratory lunch was held afterwards at the family home. Family, friends and work colleagues joined in the celebration. Trevor thanked all involved in the process of receiving this great honour from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Trevor also donated his yearly contribution to the care of the children of MOSPI and ACFSPI. Trevor and Jill have supported the care of 12 children for many years through their annual donation of £5000. Besides this annual donation they have also financially supported the building programme and were one of the main contributors to the roofing of the school and the completion of the fourth floor. I was privileged to support the nomination of Trevor for the CBE. I have been looking at the Graduation Day celebration photographs and I must congratulate Fr. Roger the teachers and staff plus the students of ACFSPI for what appears to have been a very successful celebration. The ceremony in which the students were conferred with diplomas displays the degree to which you have all accomplished the completion of the school curriculum. It is important that each student cooperates with every member of the teaching staff in order that the student can reach their full potential of learning. ACFSPI was established for the first and foremost reason for educating children. Attendance at school by every student should be 100% in order for them to receive the full fruits of the school curriculum. I urge each student to try to attend school on time and on every day of the school being opened.

How you study today will determine what you do in the future! Learning is a process and is largely governed by the ability of the teachers to teach and also of the ability of the students to listen and interiorise what is been taught them. Every teacher wants to teach you how to learn and that is the greatest thing they can teach you. It is not appropriate for any student to be disruptive in class and to distract the teacher and other students from their teaching and learning subject. I recognise that some students may be slower in comprehending the content and context of the subjects being taught. It is imperative that all students help each other to achieve the best understanding of the subjects possible. That imperative begins with each student allowing the other students in the class to be able to listen to the teacher without unwarranted interruption. Some students may require one to one tuition because that is deemed best for their progress in studies this is not a sign of failure but is a sign of necessity for their educational well being. I would hope the more learned students would do all in their ability to help any struggling student. Famiglia (Latin) means Family (English) means Pamilya (Filippino). We are the ATENEO FAMILY, we are brothers and sisters to each other and therefore responsible for and to each other. How we study today will determine how we act today and also determines what we each will achieve in the future. We each teach one another to learn.

I am delighted that your Graduation Day celebrations are a reward of all your achievements during the school year. I hope that your future achievements will enable you to attain the goals that you have each set for yourselves. I am reminded of the former students who are now School Teachers and Nurses and also of the many other of our students who are now working in other professions. These students are now productive members of the wider Filipino Society working and earning a wage that many of their parents and grandparents would only have dreamed of.

Studies made fun get done. Your contribution to the school is a contribution to the wider society. Study hard to get a good job in future life. I know studies may appear to be laborious and at a relentless pace from bed to school with little time in between so make study fun and you will get it done. Balance the demands of school and study with your family life. Parents do not be found guilty of not attending to the school needs of your children. Parents make sure your children are well prepared for a day at school do not keep them at home from school because you cannot cope with the trials of the day. Make sure they arrive at school in plenty of time and insist that they can only not attend school due to serious illness. Work with your child and their teachers in order that your child may come to learn how to learn.

I am now nearly 59 years of age and I remember the teachers who taught me how to learn. When you have learnt how to learn it is an asset to you for the rest of your life. Learning how to learn is indeed a lifelong blessing.

I wish you all a fun, exciting and joyful experience of learning to learn within the daily encounters of school life in ACFSPI.

A letter of inquiry has been sent to The Daily Inquirer regarding the writer of the article. Up to this moment, there has been no reply. Neither could I locate the writer, Mr. Raphael Jourdain Lim Lim.

Yesterday, February 28, 2011, I talked to several people regarding this case. One from the DSWD hotline who referred me to their Main office, who in turn referred me to their Quezon City office. Mr. Mitra, the one in charge in that office referred me to the Jose Fabella Center, located in Mandaluyong, to inquire if the MMDA have rescued such children, because that is where they bring rescued street kids.

Having talked to a representative of Jose Fabella Center, I was informed that they do not have in their list, boys known only as Bunso and Jose. I gave them the description of the children based on the write -up but they said it is quite difficult on their part to locate such children with no permanent address or full names.

Further, should the children be found, the DSWD of Quezon City will have to refer them to us, since we are in Region 3, and Quezon City is in NCR.

Seeking out street children or seeking out abused and abandoned children and bringing them to ACFSPI and MOSPI is not a difficult endeavour especially in the Philippines. Equality and Freedom for these children means not alone writing or reading newspaper articles or simply bringing the children to MOSPI but requires our giving of money to cover their care and wellbeing. Many journalists and individuals can bring or notify us of abused and abandoned children but nearly all end their concern at that exact point of bringing or notifying. Admittedly! we never ask them for financial help when we receive the children but I as founder of ACFSPI & MOSPI simply state facts that are most evident to me since MOSPI & ACFSPI were founded.

Please donate money to the JTJ Trust Fund or directly to the two legal incorporations MOSPI & ACFSPI or to the endowment fund to assist in funding the care of these children. The first boy, who was brought here by the DSWD does not have a full name.
He is known only as POTPOT. He was abandoned on the street. He is around 7 years old.
The second boy, Jhon Rhay Ahl Cruz, 5 years old, was brought here by the mother.
They were abandoned by the father. The mother (with proper clearances) is now working as a volunteer in the orphanage.

Ateneo Casa Famiglia: Children don’t belong in the streets

You’ll find them at every corner of the city. They approach your vehicle as you slow down to a full stop at an intersection, gently leaning on the tapered glass, peering in at the figures behind the tint. Walking the streets or even sitting at a restaurant, you’re bound to come across an outstretched hand, woeful, hopeless. The paradox of every encounter: give in so they can go rest and have something to eat, the usual story, while simultaneously perpetuating an existence that robs them of dignity and self-determination. Or coldly ignore their pleas and leave them hungry by the roadside; your choice, though not much of one, a choice we all have to make, day to day.

The Sampaguita has become the national symbol of poverty in the Philippines. Deprived of life’s basic necessities, of physical, social and spiritual nature, these children learn to lead a life resigned to inaccessibility, and prone to crime. Imagine having no chances or opportunities, not being able to dream. Theirs is a world of smog, one that we can clearly see from the inside of a car, an evil and unjust creation of society. There are no good reasons, only abandonment and indifference that has become a norm in the brisk and busy cities most of us live in. Caught up in our own problems, numb with the knowledge that right then and there anything we do is hardly of any help. Indeed, what could we do.

Somewhere in the city of San Jose Del Monte Bulacan, a few kilometers north of the metro, an entirely different scenario plays out. A five-story building stands at a narrow corner of Barangay Sapang Palay, towering above the small homes and treetops that make for most of the district’s landscape. It’s filled with children and young adults, most of which are also poor, but not in tatters; instead they don uniforms, carry school bags and lunch boxes. They stop whatever they do to greet visitors, smiling and very polite, before going back to their business: preparing for a class presentation, reviewing for a test. Theirs is a world with an unobstructed view of the sky.

Sapang Palay: Planting Seeds

Some time during the Marcos regime, a government squatter resettlement and rehabilitation program was initiated. In order to get illegal settlers out of the city, a colony was created in Sapang Palay. There and in other similar settlements the government just dumped thousands of urban poor, with no livelihood program, hardly any provisions for anything, instantly following the eviction from, and simultaneous demolition of the shanties that made for homes. Sapang Palay is home to seven hundred thousand destitute families.

About four decades later, the grand children of some of those former squatters attend Ateneo Casa Famiglia Servants of the Poor Inc. (ACFSPI), a school for the orphaned and unfortunate.

Fr. Jim Teeling, a Catholic priest from Ireland, first founded Mater Orphanorum Servants of the Poor Inc. (MOSPI), a shelter for the abandoned children of Sapang Palay in 1998. The orphans, aged four to seventeen, have lost their parents to extreme poverty, substance abuse and mental illness. Here they are offered a loving and supportive home, and provided food, clothing and a place to stay.

Ateneo Casa Famiglia was initially set up to provide for the children’s educational needs. In 2004, Casa Famiglia opened its doors to the public, taking in poor children from the surrounding neighborhood. They now provide fully accredited primary and secondary education for 400 impoverished students, operating almost solely through donations from abroad, made to the Fr. Jim Teeling, Trevor Horn and Jill Sinclair (Philippine Children) Trust Fund, a charitable foundation in the UK.

Taking heed

The orphanage, and later on the school were established and are operated by Fr. Jim Teeling and Fr. Roger Cruz, a native of Sapang Palay. They became friends in Rome while pursuing further studies, and it was there that Fr. Roger invited Fr. Jim to visit the Philippines. He flew to the country on holiday, first to see many of the sights and tourist destinations, places of absolute beauty before coming to San Jose del Monte.

On the way to Sapang Palay he noticed the road getting narrower, and the scenery changing; a heaviness began to set in, witnessing firsthand the true plight of the country’s poor, and how nothing was being done to help them. Resolute to make a difference, the tandem took it upon themselves to face the hulking problem, thus the creation of MOSPI, and subsequently, ACFSPI – small steps into correcting an enduring social evil which is the great divide between the haves and have nots.

Since then, many have joined them in their efforts, including Jill Sinclair and her husband, music magnate Trevor Horne from England, the British embassy in the Philippines, and local volunteers such as Rey and Marivic Magno and Boy and Evelyn Nazareno. Together they have built the orphanage and school to what it is today, brought about awareness and raised funds to help them accommodate more children and further provide for their basic needs and education. Others too, chip in – local poor traders help the orphanage with food and other matters. Recently a new library and refectory have been completed, among other developments. The JTJ Trust Fund is in the process of establishing a system to facilitate local donations, and more individuals and groups are offering contributions to ACFSPI.

But there is still so much work left to be done. A computer laboratory on the ground floor houses nearly a dozen old and barely functional machines. Construction for a clinic for abandoned babies and young children has long been put on hold. A technical school to enable the less academically-minded by learning sets of trade skills is yet to be established. There is a constant lack of educational materials. Financial help, particularly for construction, from Filipinos with the capacity to provide it, is most needed, and sorely lacking. These can be addressed much quicker with more hands on deck, but good help remains difficult to come by, particularly on the domestic end.

It can be done

Many a social analyst, economist and political writer from here and abroad have given their two cents on the broken state of the nation, oft saying the same thing. We have the potential for greatness, the tools to move mountains and the capacity to build sturdy, cost-efficient houses. But the hope in these faculties is mournfully misplaced. It’s because of this that time and time again, true change escapes us. Wherever our passions lie, they yield no alleviation of the predicament; almost by default, they stay dedicated to our own circumstances, to anger sparked by bad news over the country’s affairs and to a deep, barren despair.

Yet from the most remote places, random samples of ordinary people have become proof of good and possibility. People who couldn’t care less end up caring more about our plight. They don’t stand to benefit from their involvement; no investment made, nor profit gained. All they have is a light inside of them, a light that illuminates and warms when allowed to spread. This is the fundamental definition of love. Not manifested in an instant, but constantly expressed, at any given chance. Those are the times when you don’t have to second guess. You know it in your heart – and you’ll know what to do.

BUGGLES The Lost Gig was held on the 28th Septemper to raise funds primarily for the Royal Hospital for Neuro Surgery. The SPZ Group of Companies who organised the fundraising event donated a special item to be auctioned for the JTJ Trust Fund. The item raised 3500 pounds sterling. Cesare along with his wife Nina and myself were the first trustees of the now named JTJ Trust Fund. Both Cesare and Nina have given generously of their time and money to the care of the children of MOSPI and of ACFSPI. Nina and Cesare visited Sapang Palay and the then infant incorporations about ten year ago. Many of our older boys remember them with great affection and love and are deeply saddened at the loss of their Papa Cesare. Major fire in the Palanas slum area.

Some of my children`s homes were burnt down in a massive slum fire in Palanas. It was covered by all the news programmes. It was a very harrowing experience to witness. My grandchild of 1yr nearly lost his life but was rescued by a stranger. We brought two van loads of families affected by this terrible event back to Sapang Palay. If you click on the flickr link and go to 2000 families living on one acre of God`s earth you will see photos of the slum area taken last August and of my children and grandchild who live there. Many of the homes portrayed in the photographs have been completly burnt down. I wrote last year that it is a place waiting for a disaster to happen. Unfortunately I was right. There are at present four declared fatalities. Please pray for all concerned.

Ten years ago at the age of 17 when the incorporation helped me in my studies and education needs. I come from a poor family and my parent`s cannot support my education. My life has no direction and my parent`s push me to work and to earn money. I lost my hope as I had no chance to go to school to pursue my study. I prayed to the Lord to send people who will support my dreams. My prayers were answered when I met Fr. Jim and Fr. Roger. ACFSPI a school built for needy youths and unfortunate children had been established in our area. I asked them for me to be one of the youths who will be supported by this program. I was accepted as a student and was very happy and thanked the Lord because my dreams could now come through. When I learnt of the vision and mission of ACFSPI I decided to become a teacher and to help educate other unfortunate children in our country. I took my bachelor degree at Sto. Rosario Sapang Palay College. Through the help of the now Fr.Jim Teeling Trevor Horn and Jill Sinclair Trust Fund and other sponsors and the institutions I finished my degree in March 2003. After my graduation I served the institution as a teacher and later on I was promoted to head teacher of the school and acting director of the orphanage. I am the first youth who became a professional worker through the work of the institutions and the help of JTJ Trust Fund.
After serving the orphanage for almost ten years my life would not be complete if I did not support my parent`s in their needs. This is one of the goals of the institution "to educate unfortunate children to help their families" with this philosophy I decided to go back to my parent`s and to help them by applying what I learnt in the school. Now, I work at the government school in Quezon City. I work in the public school and my life there gives me lots of opportunities. I am now vice president of the teachers association. I was awarded the outstanding teacher of the year award for 2010. The school sent me to Singapore and Mindanao for training in science and in Filipino journalism. I will always be thankful to the two incorporations and to the JTJ Trust Fund for the helping hand they have given to me and to the many other poor students they help to achieve their goals in life despite the situations of poverty we were born into.

Having been given the opportunity to work with the staff and administrators of MOSPI and ACFSPI it is indeed a blessing in my life. I have been working part time with these twin incorporations for almost two years now, and I am always looking forward to meeting the resident children.
I am known as Teacher Beth in the community, and yes, I am a teacher. I teach Speech and Music to the secondary students. Dealing with these students opened my eyes to the fact that not everyone is happy, not everything is green, not everything is what it appears to be. Behind the smiles, you look deeper and you see that each child has a story to tell.Teaching children and young adults the rudiments of music, the proper way of singing, and even pronouncing some difficult words send some of them laughing. Indeed, it feels so good to hear their chuckles and their carefree laughter...just like what every child should do...laugh more often.
Teaching the children the correct enunciation, pronunciation and even the deeper meaning of quotations may somewhat appear simple, but then, why make life complicated? Some children are always happy to be able to relate to people who have time to listen Other times I teach children how to integrate themselves into the society and to be less fearful of adults and to open themselves to be trusting and loving again.
A feeling of joy, peace and contentment emanates in the two incorporations and I feel that I am guided towards working for the greater glory of the Lord and for the good of the children of ACFSPI and of MOSPI.

I was privileged to meet Father Jim and Father Roger for the first time on 5 June, when I visited Sapang Palay with my wife Denise and our two sons Patrick and Jacob, for the blessing and inauguration of the new facilities at Ateneo Casa Famiglia.

From the moment we arrived to the time we left - several hundreds of photos later - we were made extremely welcome by Fr Jim, Fr Roger, their staff and all the children of ACFSPI and MOSPI. We heard the inspiring stories of those children who graduated from the school in the past, and really enjoyed meeting the current students, who will follow in their footsteps. We were entertained by the children's excellent song and dance routines, and delighted to see all the Union Jack flags they had made to greet us with. We could feel the joy, hope and security which characterise the school.

As the newly extended Ateneo building towers proudly over the other rooftops of Sapang Palay, it sends a powerful message. Even in the midst of great deprivation, with faith, generosity and determination people can build a better life for themselves and their fellow-men. At a time when the Philippines is looking forward to a new chapter in its political life, it would be great if the country's leaders could bring the same dedication and generosity as Father Jim in tackling the urgent needs of poverty and inequality that face the Philippines. As British Ambassador, I will continue to follow with interest and admiration the work of Fr Jim and all his team, and wish them every success.

Jim Teeling, Trevor Horn and Jill Sinclair (Philippine Children) Trust Fund provides for the needs of poor Jewish, Christian and Muslim (Orphans) children and their families in the Philippines and wherever in the world the Trustees of the charity deem it necessary to do so. The new Board of Trustees will comprise of men and women from Jewish, Catholic/Christian and Muslim faith communities who strive to better the lives of the children of the economic poor throughout the world but with particular emphasis at this time in furthering the work of ACFSPI and of MOSPI in the Philippines of which Fr. Jim Teeling is the Honorary Founding President.

£4400 over two semesters is needed to fund the further education of eight of our MOSPI children.

I address this message primarily to the young adults of ACFSPI who have completed their education in the college. In celebrating your end of studies Prom and the student awards ceremony which are indicative of the strength of character and the human maturity you have all achieved primarily through your own efforts and exertions. The help of your parents, guardians and teachers would count as nothing if your own exertions and efforts in the field of study had been lacking determination and vision of goal.

The past years of study has strengthened you all to become self determining men and women. No Nation or leader will ever again be able to deprive you or your families of the freedom that a good education has empowered you with. You will each be able to stand erect and proud as Filipinos who can take their rightful place in the structuring and ordering of your nation and imbue your nation with the knowledge, self discipline, and courage which you have acquired as students of ACFSPI.

As Founding President of ACFSPI it is my ardent wish that you all strive to have a deep concern for the lives and livelihoods of all the peoples of the Philippines. You can individually and collectively write a new chapter into the history of San Jose del Monte and into the history of the Philippine Nation. The economic poverty of Sapang Palay is at present an intolerable situation that should not be allowed to continue but with your learning and knowledge and through your continued exertions and efforts on behalf of the economic poor of the Philippines you can make life better for all. Despite the current national and international problems and whether those in power mishandle or ignore the rights of the poor I urge you that as graduates of ACFSPI it is incumbent on you to work for the welfare of all Filipinos and this work must take precedence over any self enhancement, self wealth or power. Go forward into the future with a spirit of service; create a nation where all Filipinos live lives of equal opportunity of political and religious freedom. Build a nation that recognises the right of a good education and of a just wage for labour to all especially the economic poor. Young adults, Athenians! it is now time for you to direct your exertions and efforts to bringing about justice for all of your Filipino brothers and sisters and to achieve the peace that you national martyrs died for. Be a light for justice and truth in a new and life-giving Filipino Nation, assign the wrongs of the past and present into the history books break the chains of corruption which have trampled the progress of your nation and make your future and the future of all Filipinos’ a good and just future, a people whose lives are worthy of your service and a nation and people worth living for.
